"Great minds discuss ideas; Average minds discuss events; Small minds discuss people.”
- Eleanor Roosevelt

I remember coming across this when i was in secondary school juggling the concept of what it meant to be "deep" or mature. I must say the quote is quite crude (and reeks of snobbishness, unless i've misinterpreted the intention) but hey, it seems to hold a brutal grain of truth in some ways. Of course we can't be categorized cleanly like that. It's too broad a statement. Like i said, pretty crude but kind of self reflective, really. Up to you to wonder about the validity of such a statement.

it's a progressive train of thought. think of it in reverse order: you have to talk about self first before you talk about people. when you talk about people you're talking about personality and relationships. because of relationships and personalities, actions are taken, shaping events. events influence perspective of people, and the way lives are lived. these in turn inspire ideas. so if this were the order of progression of thought, then yes, what eleanor roosevelt has said holds true. but i don't agree with her statement. it's just that people think on different levels. some touch on the little things that directly affect their lives. others prefer to discuss things that impact their lives. and others just like to talk about things in general. so yeah. go figure. hehe n i think i'm sounding abit incoherent haha.

I think what the author meant is how much focus one uses their time over the three categories...everyone will discuss all three. it's just a matter how much attention u give to it. it's like gossipers. usually only very "eng" people spent their energy gossiping. like "zhuo xiao ren", backstab ppl. wheras u talk to business ppl. they usually talk about their ideas for money making.
events I dunno la, perhaps ppl who loves being in the know that they know the current affairs very well, but still complain how they don't have enough money. it's like knowing a great deal of economics, but not knowing how to profit from the knowledge in real like.
